Hawker TyphoonIB MP197 / MR-U, ‘Sharkmouth’ No.245 Squadron,2nd Tactical Air Force,Germany and RAFWarmwell, Dorset, England,June-August 1945Despite the fact that the deep chin radiatorof the Hawker Typhoon fighter was particularlysuited to the application of some aggressivelooking nose artwork, most RAF aircraft, particularly Hawker Typhoons, rarely featuredanything more than their standard squadroncolours during WWII. One high profile exceptionto this rule was Typhoon IB MP147, an aircraftwhich featured a fearsome array of teeth behindits bright blue spinner, making it one of the mostdistinctive RAF aircraft in the European Theatre.Thought to be the only Typhoon to feature arepresentation of sharks teeth on its radiator,MP417 ‘Sharky’ was issued to RAF No.245Squadron in August 1944, whilst Allied unitswere engaged in the savage fighting aroundthe Falaise Pocket and remained with the squadronuntil it disbanded on 15th August the following year.Logbook entries show that Sharky was flown bysuccessful Canadian pilot Flt. Lt. Harrison Taylor ‘Moose’Mossip, who had been awarded the Distinguished FlyingCross for his previous successes operating the Typhoonwith RAF No.1 Squadron. Known to possess a particularlyaggressive flying style, Mossip was one of the pilots whohelped to establish the reputation of the Typhoon in the groundattack role and it is thought that these sharkmouth markingswere applied to this aircraft in recognition of this tenaciousflying style. Significantly, this aircraft flew operationallyduring WWII whilst wearing these markings
